The Legends of Surfing Invitational returns to the iconic Scripps Pier for a day that celebrates the spirit, history and community of surfing. Bringing together legendary surfers, ocean advocates, supporters and friends, this special event honors the individuals who have helped shape the culture of surfing while supporting groundbreaking research and innovation.
Guests will enjoy an unforgettable day on the beach watching surf icons and invited participants take to the waves in a friendly and inspiring competition. Following the Invitational, attendees are invited to gather for a celebratory luncheon, offering the opportunity to connect with fellow supporters, athletes, and community leaders while reflecting on the day's highlights.
The celebration continues with a live auction featuring unique experiences, exclusive items, and one-of-a-kind opportunities, all benefiting vital programs and initiatives. Guests will then enjoy live entertainment from San Diego's beloved surf-rock band Seapoodle, whose energetic sound and deep roots in the local surf community provide the perfect soundtrack to close out an extraordinary day.

Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
A true icon of the sport, Gerry Lopez is the inaugural recipient of the Legends of Surfing Lifetime Achievement Award. Known as “Mr. Pipeline,” his groundbreaking style, enduring influence and lifelong dedication to surfing have inspired generations and helped shape the culture of surfing worldwide.
Event Artist: Tim Bessel
Our 2026 event artist is Tim Bessell, a La Jolla-based fine artist, sculptor and surfboard shaper. Created exclusively for this year’s Legends of Science and Surfing, his one-of-a-kind artwork honors his mother, close friends Rell Sunn and Chris O’Rourke, and all those impacted by cancer.
